OSCA Codes: Australian Breakthrough

December 6th, 2024

SPASA proudly announces a historic milestone in the swimming pool and spa industry with the recognition of new Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) codes. This breakthrough highlights the distinct expertise of Swimming Pool and Spa Builders and Service Technicians, ensuring these roles are classified as specialised trades for the first time.

A Milestone Achievement in Workforce Recognition

Previously categorised under broader ANZSCO classifications, the new OSCA system delivers tailored codes that better reflect the unique skill sets required for these roles:

  • Pool Building: Previously, Swimming Pool and Spa Builders were classified under ANZSCO Code 312112, Building Associate. Now, this occupation has been assigned its own distinct classification under OSCA Code 369932, Swimming Pool and Spa Builder.

  • Service Technician: Swimming Pool and Spa Service Technicians were previously categorised under ANZSCO Code 399999, Technicians and Trade Workers (Not Elsewhere Classified). Under the new system, OSCA Code 899937, Swimming Pool or Spa Technician, now recognises this essential occupation as a distinct and specialised field.

Years of Advocacy Lead to Progress

SPASA Chief Executive Officer, Lindsay McGrath, reflected on the long-standing efforts leading to this success:

This is the next step after many years of advocacy to have our industry recognised. The technician qualification created by industry went live in 2013 and the Pool building qualification in 2022. This recognition of new codes strengthens these key professions. SPASA is committed in the growth and recognition of our industry’s tradespeople ensuring the future success and sustainability of the pool and spa industry.

Next Steps: Expanding to New Zealand

Following the Australian success, SPASA is focusing on achieving similar recognition in New Zealand. Key initiatives include:

  • Introducing industry-recognised qualifications.

  • Advocating for SPASA to become a Private Training Establishment (PTE).

  • Driving national alignment to ensure consistent pathways for professionals.

These efforts aim to foster growth, sustainability, and respect for the pool and spa industry across Australasia.

Building the Future of the Pool and Spa Industry

With new OSCA codes and continued advocacy, SPASA is not only uplifting existing tradespeople but also laying the foundation for future professionals. Through these strides, the industry reinforces its position as a critical and respected player in the broader construction and service sectors.
